✦ The Maverick Souls · Handmade Gemstone Brooch
✦ AAA grade Malachite on an 18k gold-plated kilt pin with 19 beads, three decorative charms, and a gold starfish. A keepsake made to be displayed, not worn. Made to outlast the childhood it marks.
In ancient Rome and Greece, malachite was placed in cradles and tied to children’s beds. Its concentric green swirls were read as a protective eye: the “eye of God” watching over the infant through the night, warding away the evil eye, keeping bad spirits from the threshold. This was not superstition, it was the best technology available for protecting a new life, drawn from thousands of years of collective understanding about this stone.
By the Victorian era (1880–1901), this ancient tradition had fused with a new custom: the baby brooch. Small bar pins and kilt pins were given at christenings and births across England and Europe, pinned to baptismal gowns, worn at the first family portrait, and then carefully stored as heirlooms. They were passed down to younger siblings, kept in memory boxes, sometimes engraved simply with the word BABY. Generic enough to be inherited. Significant enough to be kept forever.
This brooch carries both traditions. Nineteen natural AAA malachite beads, their green banding unique to each stone, strung across three strands on a gold-plated kilt pin. A gold starfish at the base of the pin. Three decorative charms at the ends of each strand. A piece that holds a moment in time.

⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
This brooch is a display keepsake only. Malachite is a copper-based mineral and must never be touched, handled, or mouthed by an infant or young child. Keep displayed out of reach, hung on a nursery wall frame, placed in a shadowbox, or stored in a memory box. Do not pin to infant clothing for wear. This piece is made to mark the beginning of a life and be kept by it — displayed with intention, away from small hands.

✦ ABOUT NATURAL GEMSTONES
Malachite forms in concentric banded rings of deep and pale green — no two stones share the same pattern. The distinctive swirling eye-like markings are what led ancient cultures across the Mediterranean to regard it as a protective stone. AAA grade malachite is selected for depth of colour and strong banding definition. Natural variation between beads is a mark of genuine stone.

✦ CARE
Keep away from water, perfume, and cleaning products. Malachite is sensitive to acids and should not be exposed to household chemicals. For display, a gentle wipe with a dry soft cloth is sufficient. Store in the gift box between moves.
